ATC for growers

What is the American Truffle Company partnership?

It is a comprehensive, long-term collaboration in which our scientific team works closely with you to plan, establish, and manage your orchard using proven scientific truffle-growing methods that continue to innovate. The partnership combines full training, codified best practices, and systematic root and orchard monitoring, and brings your high-quality truffles directly to chefs and consumers through ATC’s distribution channels.

Before establishing our orchard, we talked to most major truffle companies in the US. There’s a reason we chose ATC. While everyone else was happy to sell us their trees and leave us to our own devices, ATC has been there for us every step of the way, along with their deep expertise. When ATC says your success is their success, they really mean it! I cannot recommend ATC highly enough.

After a failed 2018 truffle installation with another company that left me on my own—without access to real science—I was eager to partner with ATC. They brought rigorous, science-based guidance to every step of our new project. Their technical precision and attention to detail were critical to establishing a thriving truffle orchard across our five-acre site, and gave us strong confidence in a far more successful outcome.

—  MARK,Central Oregon

I really appreciate the responsiveness of ATC to answer all questions and work to resolve any issue that comes upespecially at a time when it is hard to get a live person to speak with at many companies. Robert, Paul & Peta are true collaborators, with a wealth of expertise. The ATC model shows skin in the game; if you succeed, they succeed.

ATC’s business model is unique and exemplary. I have worked with ATC for many years, throughout which they have helped me at every turn, while proactively staying closely involved. I could not be more pleased!

—  CHARLES, Eagle Crest Farms LLC,Pacific Northwest

ATC's science-first approach is essential for a 30+ year commitment. They give me confidence to mitigate risk and navigate the immense complexity from orchard planning through planting. Their invaluable support transforms a high-risk venture into a disciplined project. Robert's check-ins clarify local and global market realities, answering my many questions along the way. Partnering with ATC isn’t just farming—it’s a strategic investment in a growing market.

Why do ATC partner growers outperform the average grower?

Most techniques that work in Europe cannot simply be copied for use in North America. Our microclimates, soil chemistry, and—critically—the soil biome (the organisms interacting with truffle fungi) are fundamentally different. On top of that, unlike conventional crops like grapes or corn, actionable truffle science is largely absent from the public domain.

Through our own research, we’ve developed region-specific truffle science that is available only to ATC partner growers. Armed with this otherwise unavailable knowledge, our growers consistently outperform the average by a wide margin. Just as importantly, we provide ongoing leadership and proactive guidance, rather than waiting for problems to arise as in a typical consulting model.

Is an ATC partnership right for you?

The partnership is designed for growers who treat truffle cultivation as a serious agricultural investment, not a side project.

You’re likely a good fit if:

  • You own or plan to own land in a region that may be suitable for Périgord black truffles.
  • You are planning a long-term project and are comfortable with a multi-year time horizon.
  • You value data, research, and structured guidance over trial-and-error.
  • You want an expert team that will challenge assumptions and help you make disciplined decisions.
  • You want to avoid the pitfalls that have historically rendered 98%+ of truffle orchards failures in North America.

If you’re still assessing whether your land or target region might be suitable, we encourage you to start with our truffle fundamentals and suitability resources, then return to explore a potential partnership.

1. Full guidance & training for truffle farming

We help you navigate every major decision from the earliest planning discussions through orchard maturity, tailored to your specific situation, microclimate, and soil. That typically includes:

  • High-level site and project review to understand your goals and constraints
  • Guidance on orchard layout and planting strategy for truffle production
  • Training on irrigation, ground cover, and orchard maintenance practices
  • Practical recommendations for day-to-day management as the orchard develops, specifically tailored to your local conditions.
  • Formulating a winning truffle dog strategy and sourcing dogs trained by some of the best trainers and most experienced truffle hunters in the world
  • Preparation for harvest operations once truffles begin to appear

You are never left to interpret generic instructions on your own. You gain direct access to a team whose sole focus is truffle science and truffle orchards. Throughout, our commitment is to bring scientific rigor, accumulated experience, and practical judgment to each major decision point.

2. Codified best-practice program

Instead of one-off advice, you benefit from a structured program of best practices developed from truffle science and real-world orchards.

  • A coherent framework for how to manage a truffle orchard over time
  • Recommendations that account for your region, conditions, and project goals. When it comes to truffles, there is no one-size-fits-all.
  • Periodic updates as our research and field experience identify refinements
  • Guidance to avoid common mistakes that can compromise long-term productivity

The goal is not to overwhelm you with theory, but to translate complex science into clear, practical steps for your specific orchard.

3. Scientific monitoring

Truffle orchards do not fail overnight. Problems usually develop slowly and invisibly—unless you know where to look.

As part of the partnership, we implement systematic monitoring of key indicators of orchard and root health. In practice, this can include:

  • Periodic analysis of root systems to understand colonization and development
  • Review of soil and orchard conditions within truffle-ideal parameters
  • Identification of trends that signal emerging risks or opportunities
  • Actionable recommendations to adjust management before small issues become larger ones

This is not casual observation. It is a structured feedback loop between your orchard and our scientific team, designed to support earlier, more informed interventions.

4. Distribution support & market access

Successful truffle production is only part of the equation. The other part is ensuring that your harvest reaches buyers who value quality without sacrificing profit to third party middlemen. Within the partnership, we provide:

  • Guidance on harvest timing and handling to protect quality
  • Standards for grading and preparing truffles for premium markets
  • Direct access to established distribution relationships, including Michelin level chefs and consumers

As your partner, our distribution infrastructure takes the guesswork and hard work out of the equation for you. Your truffles are always sold at the highest price possible, directly to consumers and chefs.
